Campus Nyland – ERTMS Test and Training Facility by Kjell Holter
Campus Nyland – ERTMS Test and Training Facility by Kjell Holter
Campus Nyland, located in Oslo, is Bane NOR’s central hub for testing, training, and simulation related to the rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Opened in collaboration with Siemens Mobility, the facility represents a major milestone in Norway’s ambition to become the first country to operate its entire railway network with a single digital interlocking system.
Key Features of Campus Nyland
• Simulation and Training Facilities: Includes both physical and virtual reality-based simulators to train railway personnel in operating and maintaining ERTMS systems.
• Test Lab: Equipped with real technical components from all central systems in the ERTMS program, including signalling, safety installations, traffic management systems, and onboard train components.
• Cross-sector Collaboration: Used by Bane NOR, Siemens, Alstom, and Thales for testing and training. The Norwegian Railway Academy also conducts dispatcher courses here.
• Scenario-Based Learning: Offers over 150 training scenarios to prepare staff for real-world operations and emergencies.
Benefits of the central facility:
1. Centralized Testing and Quality Assurance
– All new systems are rigorously tested at Campus Nyland before field deployment.
– Reduces risk and ensures smoother implementation across the network.
– Continues involving suppliers (Siemens, Alstom, Thales) in joint testing and innovation.
– Share best practices with other European rail operators to stay ahead in digital rail transformation.
2. Workforce Development
– Campus Nyland ensures that thousands of railway employees—from train operators to maintenance crews—are trained in the new system.
– Promotes digital competence and adaptability across the sector.
– Offer remote and modular training options to reach staff in rural areas.
– Include refresher courses and certifications to maintain high competence levels.
3. Monitor and Evaluate Implementation
– Use Campus Nyland as a feedback loop to gather data from field operations.
– Adjust training and system configurations based on real-world performance
4. Public Engagement and Transparency
– Educate passengers and stakeholders about the benefits of ERTMS.
– Provide regular updates on rollout progress and expected improvements in service.
Experiences with the ERTMS Test Lab
Bane NORs test lab ensure the successful integration of ERTMS Traciside, ERTMS Onboard and a new Traffic Management System (TMS).
The facility includes “real” test systems (IXL, RBC, TMS, OBU, DMI, GSM-R etc.) and simulators (e.g. trains and trackside objects) in a modern space provides our skilled test engineers and suppliers with the best possible conditions for testing system integration, generic and specific applications of the new ERTMS Levele 2 signalling system.
The ERTMS test lab will also be the central hub for future test and commissioning when ERTMS is taken into operation on new lines, and when specific application changes are needed throughout the network. The lab is also used for ESC/RSC testing with lab-lab interconnections.
Experiences with the ERTMS Training Centre
The ERTMS Training Centre is a Success!
Bane NORs training centre ensures the successful implementation of ERTMS. At Campus Nyland, we have developed a 3,000 m² facility with training systems, simulators, and modern spaces to provide our skilled instructors and course participants with the best possible conditions for gaining a positive and thorough understanding of the new technology and its operational implications.
Our first railway line using the new signalling technology was launched in November 2024. We are now preparing for the next line, and some equipment (especially point machines) has already been installed and put into use in many locations. At the same time, several trains have been retrofitted, and some train dispatchers have also started using the new systems.
For each installation, mandatory training is offered on the various components and systems. To date, 1,312 unique individuals have taken one or more courses with us. These participants have completed a total of 3,438 exams.
Additionally, we are ahead of much of Europe and have welcomed 2,610 visitors from around the world. We are proud of this success, the increased digital competence, and the satisfaction of our course participants as we upgrade and digitize this part of Norway’s railway infrastructure.
