CURRENT STATE OF RAILWAY SIGNALLING PROJECTS IN MOROCCO | By Achraf Kailech
Morocco has made significant progress in modernising its railway signalling systems as part of a broader strategy to enhance safety, capacity, and network performance. Led by the national railway operator ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer), these efforts cover both recently completed projects and major initiatives currently under development across the entire national network.
Modernisation of Conventional Lines
On conventional lines, ONCF continues to upgrade legacy signalling installations by deploying modern interlocking systems, centralized traffic control, and improved telecommunications. These projects aim to increase operational reliability, reduce incidents, and accommodate growing passenger and freight demand. Several corridors have benefited from renewed signalling as part of electrification and capacity enhancement programs, supported by international financial institutions and technical partners.
High-Speed Rail and Advanced Signalling
Following the successful commissioning of the Tangier–Kenitra High-Speed Line, equipped with ETCS Level 2, Morocco is extending high-speed rail infrastructure southward. The ongoing Kenitra–Marrakech High-Speed Line represents a major step forward, with state-of-the-art signalling and train control systems designed to support operations at speeds up to 320 km/h. International consortia involving European signalling specialists are contributing advanced ERTMS-based solutions, ensuring interoperability and high safety standards.
In parallel, sections of the existing network are being prepared for future high-speed or high-capacity operations through the deployment of ETCS Level 1, improving both safety and line throughput.
International Partnerships and Local Capacity Building
Morocco’s signalling projects are characterized by strong collaboration with international companies such as Alstom and Compagnie des Signaux, as well as local partners. Beyond infrastructure delivery, these projects emphasize knowledge transfer, local maintenance capabilities, and specialized training, including ERTMS driver simulators and modern traffic management systems.
Outlook
With ambitious expansion plans extending toward 2030 and beyond, Morocco is positioning itself as a regional leader in railway signalling and control systems. The combination of modern signalling technologies, structured international partnerships, and a long-term safety-focused vision places the Moroccan railway network among the most advanced in Africa.
