Efficient Reporting and Tracking of Railway Test Campaigns

Test facilities, including laboratory equipment, test tracks, and software simulators, are essential for conducting test campaigns of systems and software. While some tests, especially those involving software, can be automated, a substantial part of signaling and railway system testing still depends on manual efforts.

Globally, as of 2020, 44% of IT companies employed automated testing for 50% or more of their testing activities. However, fully automated testing strategies are rare, with only 5% of companies implementing such strategies throughout their development cycles. Most companies maintain a manual-to-automated testing ratio of 75:25 or 50:50.
In the railway industry, automation adoption may be slower compared to other sectors due to the complexity and critical nature of railway systems. This highlights a critical dependency on human factors for testing execution and accurate reporting, especially in the realm of safety-critical applications.
Planning the Test Campaigns as an important input
One of the first steps in test campaigns is to define the test objectives in the test plan. The content of the test planning can easily be incorporated into the test reports.
Let’s imagine a scenario for the vehicle onboard system that is not yet authorized and which functionality has to be checked. The identification of the test scenarios could be done on a system level, country level, based on customer requirements, or a combination of any.
