ERTMS-E IMPLEMENTATION FOR SPECIAL VEHICLES | By Eelco Schrik
ERTMS-E IMPLEMENTATION FOR SPECIAL VEHICLES | By Eelco Schrik
The roll-out of ERTMS requires rail vehicles to be equipped with an intelligent ERTMS onboard computer (‘EVC’). However, EVC installation is not always feasible for unique (historic) rail vehicles or small vehicle series, because they usually require special solutions, and ERTMS suppliers have little appetite for such small-scale special
projects. Concurrently, small railway operators are not equipped for managing expensive contracts with ERTMS suppliers.
If no ERTMS solution is developed for such vehicles and their operators, they will be expelled from the network. TU Delft proposes the ERTMS-E concept as a solution. ERTMS-E works by dividing the EVC functionality across simple onboard electronics, with a wayside server running the EVC software. The onboard and wayside hardware are interconnected via wireless communications (e.g., FRMCS). This approach moves the intelligent software and hardware from the vehicles to the wayside, reducing the amount of proprietary equipment required for vehicle retrofitting. The simple onboard electronics and software could be bought cost-effectively by operators to install and maintain themselves. The wayside server and associated software could be maintained and (TSI-)updated for a large group of operators / vehicles at the same time, leading to a cost-effective solution. ERTMS-E is compatible with ERTMS.
The bottom half (green) of the figure above shows the ERTMS-E concept under ERTMS Level 2:
- Train detection, interlocking, and RBC remain unchanged and perform their standard functions;
- Instead of having an EVC in the vehicle that communicates with the RBC, the task is performed by an EVC-Application on a server on the same network as the RBC, using the same data protocol. Any MAs sent by the RBC travel along the wired electrical and/or fiber optic network and are interpreted by the EVC-Application. The EVC-Application manages all complex ERTMS/ETCS functions, calculates the braking curve, and wirelessly transmits a Speed Authorization (SA) via FRMCS (which could also use public 4G or 5G, though this is not further considered here) through a simple data protocol to the EVC-E in the vehicles. The EVC-E units in the vehicles respond by sending any balise messages and their current speed, via FRMCS, to the EVC-Application;
- The EVC-Application then compiles a position report from the balise messages and speed information received from the train. This report is sent over the wired electrical and/or fiber optic network back to the RBC, thus closing the circle and fulfilling the ERTMS interface requirements towards the RBC and ensuring ERTMS-E compatibility to ERTMS.
