If any part of the system fails, the trains are safely withdrawn, and, as a backup, the orientation data obtained up to that point is used. The method of transporting passengers has not changed significantly for one hundred and fifty years, there have been refinements and improvements, but the principles are essentially the same. If someone fell asleep a century and a half ago and woke up today, they would be amazed by the television, the Internet, and household appliances, but they would only recognize the railway station.
