What is CLAUDE.md, and why should you care?
If you’ve started using Claude Code for engineering tasks, you’ve probably noticed that it doesn’t automatically know that you’re working to EN 50129, that your control tables follow a specific in-house format, or that “route” and “overlap” mean something very precise in your world.
That’s where CLAUDE.md comes in.
CLAUDE.md is a plain-text file you place at the root of your working project folder. Every time Claude Code starts a session in that folder, it reads this file first, even before you say anything. Think of it as a professional briefing note that you hand to a very capable engineering assistant at the start of each shift.
The result: Claude stops asking you to explain your domain from scratch and starts helping you productively from the first message.
